Thanks to the help of my long-time friend, Diane Jones, I had the pleasure of experiencing ArtPrize® which is a radically open, independently organized international art competition with an unprecedented $200,000 top prize decided entirely by public vote. For 19 days, three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, art from around the world pops up in every inch of downtown, and it’s all free and open to the public. This year, there were more than 1,500 artists displaying their art at more than 150 venues.
Although, I usually capture images at 120 mph from a moving helicopter. I chose to submit a 52″ x 74″ framed, museum quality photograph printed on canvas titled, “Heaven on Earth”. The photograph was taken from a wooden footbridge on a currently abandoned farm just outside of Dexter, MI, a place that will soon be developed into a subdivision. Part of a nature series, “Heaven on Earth” is an ethereal image of a family of four swans searching for their breakfast in the mist at sunrise.
ArtPrize was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Never have I had so many people have the chance to view my art.
Thanks Diane & Bob for your help and hospitality!
